Glen Canyon to Host Triathlon on Saturday

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Oct. 13, 2009. It is reproduced in full below.

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area on Saturday, Oct. 17, will host the Powell 3 Triathlon. This is the third year Glen Canyon has hosted the swim-bike-run endurance competition.

The triathlon will take place in the Wahweap Marina area from approximately 8:00 a.m. through 2:00 p.m. Saturday and will result in detoured traffic and area closures as follows:

A portion of the Stateline Launch Ramp will be closed to serve as the staging area for the event. The first segment of the triathlon is the swimming leg, which will take place at Stateline at 8:00 a.m. The ramp will remain open for launching. Boaters should be aware that the area will be congested throughout the day.

To ensure the safety of triathlon participants, the southbound lane of Lakeshore Drive will be closed to motor vehicle traffic. Incoming traffic will need to enter through the Wahweap south entrance, and exit through the Wahweap north entrance.

Highway 89 will remain open; however, please watch for triathlon runners and bicyclists on Highway 89. Triathlon participants will follow a course along the Highway 89 northbound lane from the Wahweap south entrance station to the Wahweap north entrance station, where they will exit the highway.

National Park Service rangers and officers with the Arizona Department of Public Safety will be stationed at all major intersections and other areas to direct the flow of traffic.

Spectators are welcome but are responsible for payment of any applicable National Park Service entrance fees. The triathlon is anticipated to conclude at approximately 2:00 p.m.
