The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on March 12, 2010. It is reproduced in full below.

Springtime is nearly upon us, and now is the perfect time for visitors to venture to Whiskeytown National Recreation Area for a ranger-guided hike on some of the parks most popular and scenic trails. In concert with the Healthy Shasta Initiative and First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move Campaign, both of which recognize daily exercise as an essential component of a healthy lifestyle, Whiskeytown will be offering hikes every Saturday from March 13, 2010, through April 24. “As a partner in Healthy Shasta and the First Lady’s meaningful endeavors, the National Park Service is committed to providing our community members with opportunities to boost their physical activity and discover the natural wonders of Whiskeytown’s backcountry," stated Superintendent Jim Milestone.

Visitors can look forward to elevating their heart rate and experience the natural sights and sounds of the forest and wildlife that share the trail. “Now is a great time to hit the trails with the whole family and build up to the challenge of hiking to all three waterfalls during our special Waterfall Week event which runs from April 18 through April 24," concluded Milestone.

The ranger-guided hikes are free and open to all ages, though reservations for the programs are required and allotted on a first-come-first-served basis. Reservations can be made up to two weeks in advance of the date for each hike by calling the Visitor Center at (530) 246-1225.

Details for each of the hikes will be available when calling the Visitor Center. The tentative schedule for the Saturday hikes s as follows:

March 27 - Lower Brandy Creek Trail

April 3 - Clear Creek Canal Trail
