Temporary Suspension of Scheduled Boat Tours to the USS Arizona Memorial

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on March 30, 2010. It is reproduced in full below.

There will be a temporary suspension of scheduled boat tours to the USS Arizona Memorial April 5-14, 2010.

The new visitor center and all other Pearl Harbor Historic Sites (Pacific Aviation Museum, USS Bowfin Submarine Park and Museum, and Battleship Missouri Memorial) will remain open during this time.

Visitor and staff safety is the primary reason for taking this temporary step. Pile driving in the immediate vicinity of the boat dock and near the theater building requires moving 90 foot concrete piles through the air.

Project Director Tom Fake noted that, “The activity of pile driving requires an exclusion zone for safety and will prevent visitor access to the dock area. Taking this step will solve differential settlement of the theater building and provide visitor access for decades to come."
