On Monday August 30 at approximately 7:30 pm a kayaker reported seeing a human skull in a cove below Battery Spencer in the Marin Headlands, part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The kayaker notified the National Park Service, and a team of U.S. Coast Guard and NPS Rangers immediately performed a search of the cove. Due to approaching darkness, NPS decided to resume the search the following morning.
NPS lifeguards located the skull on Tuesday, August 31st. Shortly afterwards, an NPS Ranger and a US Park Police detective were transported by boat to the cove. At the scene, they recovered an intact skull along with additional bones, clothing, and jewelry. Marin County Search and Rescue, Marin County Sheriff's Office, Marin County Coroner's Office, and the National Park Service are attempting to recover additional remains today, September 3rd. Rescuers are rappelling 600 feet down the cliff from Battery Spencer.
Neither the identity nor the gender of the victim is known at the present time. The Marin County Coroner's Office will release that information once it is known.
