Photo Magic with Johann Schumacher

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Jan. 6, 2011. It is reproduced in full below.

On Sunday, January 9, photographer Johann Schumacher will share his talents and knowledge with visitors at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. The program begins at 2:15 PM and concludes at 4 PM. There will be an indoor presentation followed up with an outdoor segment. Visitors will bring their own cameras and brave the elements to learn about getting the perfect nature shot.

Johann Schumacher is a graphic designer and nature photographer who works from his home in Queens, New York. He appreciates the bare bones of winter, spending hours upon hours observing wildlife and snapping photos. "I enjoy the cold very much," he said with a smile. "The winter is far more appealing to me than any other season because it is a season of survival."

Schumacher's photography credits include American Scientist, Audubon, Birder's World, The New York Times, National Geographic, Natural History, the magazine National Park Service and many others.

Visitors must bring their own cameras and should dress for the weather. Since snow is predicted for Friday, call the Wildlife Refuge before leaving for the event to make sure it is open. The Visitor Center number is 718-318-4340.
