Chickasaw National Recreation Area in
Sulphur, Oklahoma, is recruiting for friendly and enthusiastic volunteers for the Trails & Rails program. Trails & Rails is a partnership between the National Park Service and Amtrak to provide on-board education programs to passengers on trains. The program is coordinated through the Volunteer-In-Parks program.
Trails & Rails Volunteers represent the National Park Service as tour guides, providing Amtrak passengers with information about
Oklahoma ’s National Park units while aboard the Heartland Flyer. Passengers will be introduced to topics including the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Oklahoma and Texas; the history of the area; the geological story of these areas; descriptions of the Oklahoma and Texas landscape and its animals and plants; the economic story; and the role of the railroad in this region.
Volunteers board the Heartland Flyer in
Norman, Oklahoma and are available for information and questions along the route to Fort Worth, Texas and back. Volunteers must be able to stand for long periods of time on a moving train. Trails & Rails is a full-day commitment, with a five-hour layover in Fort Worth. Uniforms and training will be provided. All volunteers must be able to attend a day-long, required training on Saturday, April 16, 2011.
