ST. THOMAS TO CLOSE TEMPORARILY FOR PRESCRIBED FIRE

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on March 9, 2011. It is reproduced in full below.

OVERTON, Nev. - The National Park Service will be conducting a prescribed fire in the area around the historic St. Thomas town site during the week of March 14. The exact date of the burn will be determined next week based on weather conditions. The controlled burn will encompass about 35-acres and take about one day. On that day, St. Thomas and the road leading to the town site will be closed to visitors.

Last month park crews removed tamarisk plants to improve access for visitors and prevent damage to historic structures. The controlled burn will remove the cut and piled tamarisk from last months project.
