Lowell, MA - The National Park Service is seeking to improve the trolley safety and operations at specific intersections within downtown Lowell. The improvements include detection systems and traffic signal modifications at three intersections: Market Street and Dutton Street, at Merrimack Street and Dutton Street, and at French Street and Arcand Drive
A new series of trolley traffic control lights have been installed along the trolley tracks at key junctions to provide extra safety to the trolley operation, synchronized with motor vehicle traffic controls. In addition, a special "no turn on right" signal has been installed at the intersection of Market and Dutton Streets. This signal is designed to prevent motor vehicles from making a right on red when the trolley is present.
Motor vehicle operators are asked to become familiar with the new signal system when they are in downtown Lowell and obey the signals when in operation.
