Las Vegas, NM: Fort Union National Monument announces itsmonthly Glimpses of the Past presentation, "Weaving of the Southwest, Tapetes de Lana." The program will be held at the CCHP/Santa Fe Trail Interpretive Center, 116 Bridge Street, in Las Vegas, Thursday, Nov. 17, 2001, at 7:00PM. Using intricate designs and distinct, vibrant colors, the weavers of the Southwest have made their designs, tapestries, and blankets both immediately recognizable and treasured worldwide. Join Teresa Victor as she presents her knowledge and practice of historic weaving, dyeing, and wool spinning techniques of the Southwest.
Teresa Victor, a native of Las Vegas, NM, grew up around weaving, spinning and dyeing. Victorapprenticed under her mother Carla Gomez (Executive Director and Founder of Tapetes de Lana) beginning at the age of five. At the age of eight, Victor began working at the El Rancho de Las Golondrinas living history museum in Santa Fe, NM and demonstrated weaving, spinning, dyeing, rope making, and soap making for over 20 years. Victor is currently the studio manager for the Las Vegas Branch of Tapetes de Lana and teaches weaving classes through New Mexico Highlands University. In 2006, Victor was accepted into the Spanish Market for traditional Rio Grande weaving.
