Winterfest at National Lakeshore

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Dec. 20, 2011. It is reproduced in full below.

INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE: Embrace winter and have some fun at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore's Winterfest Celebration from 12:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m., Saturday, January 7 at the Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education.

Take a walk on the wild side using the park's free cross-country skis or snowshoes. Pick up some skiing tips or learn about other trails to explore in the winter from experienced park rangers. The kids can enjoy a puppet show to learn where Marvin the Duck goes each winter and then create a craft such as a yarn basket or paper mache squirrel nest. It doesn't matter if it snows or not, National Park Service staff will be teaching about winter ecology in the beautiful oak savanna of Miller Woods. This indoor and outdoor program will feature something for the whole family to enjoy, including refreshments to warm up your taste buds.

The Douglas Center is located at 100 North Lake Street in the Miller section of Gary, Indiana. For more information on this or other programs at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, visit the park website at www.nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit or contact our information desk at 219-395-1882.
