In honor of Black History Month, the Lowell Folklife Series invites you to an Afro-Caribbean workshop with a hint of Caribbean carnival. Jorge Arce is a percussionist, educator, and native of Ponce, Puerto Rico. The interactive performance on Friday, February 24th will present music, dances, lore, and stories steeped in the African ancestry of Puerto Rican culture. The workshop will feature over 20 percussion instruments played throughout the Caribbean.
A special treat will be two carnival masqueraders wearing vejigante masks characteristic of the season. Audience members will be invited to join in on rhythm instruments and dances throughout the show.
The program will take place at the Lowell National Historical Park Visitor Center, 246 Market Street, Lowell, Massachusetts, at 7pm on Friday, Feb. 24, 2012.
