Hurricane Sandy Advisory #3

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Oct. 29, 2012. It is reproduced in full below.

HARKERS ISLAND, NC - Cape Lookout National Seashore remains closed to all visitors and all services are shut down until further notice.

Hurricane Sandy passed off shore of the park on Sunday. All park staff and volunteers were accounted for by Monday morning. All visitors still on the islands were also accounted for by Monday morning.

The area is still experiencing unusually high tides and winds. If weather and tide conditions allow, the initial assessments of the islands-North Core Banks (Portsmouth Island), Middle Core Banks, South Core Banks, and Shackleford Banks-will begin today.

In the following days, more detailed examinations of island facilities will occur. Once it is known that conditions are safe the park will reopen.

As more information becomes available, the National Park Service will post updates on the park website at https://www.nps.gov/calo and via Twitter at https://twitter.com/CapeLookoutNPS and Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Cape-Lookout-NPS/472724519415040.
