July 4th Community Picnic in the Park

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on June 24, 2013. It is reproduced in full below.

Celebrate our nation's independence with artillery demonstrations, historical games, an All-American cook-out, music, and more during the 3rd Annual Community Picnic in the Park at Valley Forge National Historical Park. The picnic will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Visitor Center front lawn. Learn about the meaning of the American Flag and the pivotal role the Valley Forge encampment played in securing our freedom from Great Britain. Pack a picnic or purchase hot dogs and hamburgers on-site.

Living history and artillery demonstrations will take place at the Muhlenberg Brigade Huts from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ranger-led walks and Trolley Tours will depart from the Visitor Center throughout the day.

Special readings of the Declaration of Independence, by a Thomas Jefferson re-enactor, will take place throughout the afternoon in front of the Visitor Center. Inside, view an 1840s anastatic copy of the Declaration of Independence - one of only two copies known to exist. This rare document will be on display courtesy of Tom Lingenfelter. Visitors will also have the opportunity to sign a copy of the Declaration of Independence.

This event is sponsored by PECO in partnership with Valley Forge National Historical Park, The Encampment Store, The Friends of Valley Forge Park and the Valley Forge Convention & Visitors Bureau.
