SEARCH UNDERWAY FOR MISSING LAS VEGAS MAN
BOULDER CITY, Nev. - Officials are searching for a 30-year-old Las Vegas man who was last seen swimming in Lake Mead east of Callville Bay in the Virgin Basin June 23.
At 2:01 p.m., the Lake Mead National Recreation Area Interagency Communication Center received a 911 call reporting that a man disappeared underwater. Witnesses said he was swimming in a small cove with friends and began to struggle. He was not wearing a lifejacket.
Officials from the National Park Service, Nevada Department of Wildlife and Callville Bay Marina began an immediate search from the point where he was last seen. After a thorough grid search of the cove, efforts were suspended around 4:30 p.m.
The National Park Service resumed the search at 6 a.m. June 24 with assistance from the Nevada Department of Wildlife and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Search and Rescue.
The National Park Service and Nevada Department of Wildlife are investigating the incident. Alcohol appears to be a contributing factor.
This is the second incident in a week where an individual went missing after swimming without a lifejacket. The National Park Service strongly encourages visitors to wear lifejackets while swimming, especially when high winds are forecast.
