Speaker Series Continues With “Then and Now, Repeat Photography of the Petrified Forest” Lecture September 4

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Aug. 21, 2013. It is reproduced in full below.

Petrified Forest, AZ - To help all understand and enjoy Petrified Forest National Park, experts in their respective fields are being invited to share their knowledge and enthusiasm in a reinvigorated in-park 'speaker series'. Presentations are scheduled for the first Wednesday of every month, and last approximately one hour.

The next presentation in this 'speaker series' is from park paleontologist Bill Parker on an ongoing repeat photography project to better understand how the park landscape has changed through time. Petrified Forest has been a national park for over a century and an attraction for visitors for even longer. Accordingly thousands of historic photos exist of the petrified wood deposits, visitors, trails, roads, and buildings. By matching these locations and repeating the shots we can learn much about the history of the park and how it has changed (and not changed) over the last 130 years.

When: Wednesday September 4, 2013, 10 am

Where: Community Building at Painted Desert Visitor Center (off I-40, exit 311)

Cost: Free to access the Painted Desert Visitor Center complex and this presentation.

To continue into the park, a $10 entry fee applies

All are welcome, and the Community Building is fully accessible.

Need more information? Please contact Bill Parker (contact information above).

We look forward to seeing you!
