BOULDER CITY, NEV. - The following events are happening at Lake Mead National Recreation Area Nov. 28 through Dec. 15.
Mountain Man Turkey Trot Nov 28
Around 700 people will race through Lake Mead National Recreation Area Nov. 28 along the Historic Railroad Trail. The Turkey Trot laps at the trailhead on Lakeshore Drive to the Hoover Dam and back. Visitors to Lake Mead may experience delays along Lakeshore Drive. For more information on this permitted event, visit http://www.mountainmanevents.com/turkeytrot.htm.
Make s'mores at park headquarters Dec 7
Gather around a campfire and make s'mores Dec. 7 during the Boulder City Santa's Electric Night Parade at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area Park Headquarters, 601 Nevada Way, Boulder City, Nev. Smokey Bear, Puddle the Blue Goose, Mojave Max and the "S'more Making Team" will pass out marshmallows, graham crackers and chocolate from 4-7 p.m. The parade kicks off at 4:30 p.m. Lake Mead NRA employees will participate in this year's parade on the "Recreate on Public Lands" float with other federal and state agencies.
Parade of Lights Dec 7
Around 50 boats adorned with lights and holiday decorations will participate in the annual Lake Mead Boat Owner's Association's Parade of Lights 6:30 to 9 p.m. Dec. 7 at Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Boats will depart from Las Vegas Boat Harbor and Lake Mead Marina and travel toward Boulder Beach, just south of Pyramid Island. The best viewing for the parade is from Boulder Beach. Alan Bible Visitor Center Open House Dec 7-8
Lake Mead National Recreation Area and the Western National Parks Association are holding an open house at the Alan Bible Visitor Center Dec. 7-8. Enjoy a 15 percent discount on purchases both days. Come into the visitor center Dec. 8 for additional savings, ranger programs, hot drinks and free treats. A portion of proceeds from sales will help support interpretive and educational programs at Lake Mead National Recreation Area. For more information, call (702) 293-8990. Visitor center hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Calico Racing Hoover Dam Marathon Dec 14
Nearly 900 runners will race through Lake Mead National Recreation Area along the River Mountains Loop and Historic Railroad trails from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 14. The Calico Racing Hoover Dam Marathon will start and finish at Boulder Beach. Visitors to Lake Mead may experience delays along Lakeshore Drive and additional traffic at Boulder Beach. The Dock of Lights Dec 14
The Dock of Lights is Dec. 14 at the Callville Bay Marina. Decorated boats from 16 to 65 feet will be tied along the courtesy dock where visitors can walk along to see the holiday lights. Children of all ages can visit Santa Claus on his boat to tell him their holiday wishes. Anyone may enter a boat in the event. Each boat entry will receive two tickets for the buffet in the lounge. Navajo Rug & Jewelry Show Dec 14-15
Hubbell Trading Post, the oldest continuously operated trading post on the Navajo Nation, is bringing a collection of hand-woven Navajo rugs and silver and turquoise jewelry to the Lake Mead National Recreation Area Alan Bible Visitor Center 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Dec. 14-15.
Special rug talks with Hubbell Trading Post trader Edison Eskeets and master weaver Brenda Spencer will be held at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. each day. They will describe the history, symbolism and artistry of the rugs. Eskeets will also discuss how the rugs are created and how to choose and care for them. Like the weavers themselves, no two rugs are alike, but each evokes a sense of place and incorporates traditional designs and colors. As Eskeets says, "Every Navajo rug conveys an important story."
It takes a weaver 400 hours to produce a 3x5 rug from start to finish. Throughout the day, Spencer will demonstrate traditional weaving techniques.
