Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park invites the public to attend a special, ranger-guided tour that will begin at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center on Saturday, January 4, 2014, at 2 p.m. Participants will ultimately caravan to Tour Stop #2, Battleline Road, where they will take part in a half mile walking tour.
A good understanding of the ground on which an army stands often determines whether it will be victorious in battle. Years later, after cannon and rifles have silenced their deadly work, the same ground plays a huge role in understanding how historic events were shaped on a battlefield.
This tour will benefit from a lack of thick foliage, providing visitors an often missed opportunity to see the strategic advantages in terrain that enabled U.S. General George Thomas' men to stand "as sturdy as an oak tree" in the face of overwhelming odds in and around Kelly Field on the morning of Sept. 20, 1863.
Please remember this is a walking tour outdoors. We encourage participants to wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the conditions
