During National Volunteer Week, April 6-12, the National Park Service commends Volunteer Kathy Wisiackas, who assists with receiving visitors to Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. Kathy recently began volunteering at the park's visitor center, working 8-10 hours per week. She welcomes visitors as they enter the park and answers their questions about the history of Roanoke Island.She also assists in visitor center operations, patrols paths to monitor their conditions for safe use, picks up litter, and serves as a friendly and approachable presence to park visitors.
Kathy says "Volunteering at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site has enabled me to share my fascination with the history of Roanoke Island and the mystery of the English Lost Colony with visitors from far and wide.I am proud to represent the National Park Service while helping out at the visitor center, amidst a beautiful setting of live oaks and Spanish moss, just steps away from the Waterside Theatre and the Elizabethan Gardens."
Kathy's volunteer supervisor, Park Ranger Rob Bolling, said "Kathy's dedication and energy are inspiring contributions to the park's visitor services team.We are grateful to have her on board as a citizen volunteer to share some great stories about the history of our nation. We make a point of letting her know that her work is very much appreciated!"
In addition, the National Park Service appreciates the many local community, private organizations and youth groups that volunteer countless hours in assisting with roadside and beach cleanup in the national park units of the Outer Banks Group! Thank you for your continued support in assisting the National Park Service in keeping our public lands special places to visit and play for everyone!
