BOULDER CITY, NEV. -The following events are happening at Lake Mead National Recreation Area Feb. 14 through March 28.
Fee-free day, Feb 14-16
Entrance fees will be waived at Lake Mead National Recreation Area Feb. 14-16 in celebration of the Presidents Day weekend. Fees for camping, lake use or use of concessions still apply.
Ranger Chat: Wingspan Myths, Feb 14 and 15
Stop by the Lake Mead Visitor Center at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Feb. 14 and 15 to learn about the wingspans of a variety of desert birds. Participants can compare their arm spans to these creatures of flight. Call 702-293-8990 for more information.
Ranger Hike: Historic Railroad Trail, Feb 14
Hike along an old railroad bed which leads to five large tunnels. The Railroad was built to transport supplies to Hoover Dam during the 1930s when the dam was under construction. Learn the history of this cultural landmark. Call the Lake Mead Visitor Center at 702-293-8990 to make a reservation.
Sunset Program: Bats - Friend or Foe, Feb 15
Join a ranger at 5 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Boulder Beach Campground Amphitheater to learn about bat myths and how the flying mammals benefit the planet. Call 702-293-8990 for more information.
Ranger Chat: The Mojave Desert: A Magical Land, Feb 21 and 22
Stop by the Lake Mead Visitor Center at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Feb. 21 and 22 to learn about the animals and plants that call the Mojave Desert home, from the desert bighorn sheep found in the rugged mountains to the smallest beavertail cactus life abundant and thriving in what many think is barren landscape. Ranger Hike: White Owl Canyon, Feb 28
Explore a twisting wash with multiple signs of life Feb. 28. This hike begins near the water's edge and winds into a narrow canyon where birds of prey have been spotted in the past. Call 702-293-8990 to make a reservation.
Valley of Fire Stage Race, March 1
The Valley of Fire Stage Race will travel through Lake Mead National Recreation Area March 1. Around 300 cyclists will race south from Overton, Nevada, down Northshore Road to mile 45. Drivers should use caution when passing cyclists. Cyclists are reminded that they must bike in single file on the roadways. Cycling abreast is not permitted within Lake Mead NRA. Six Tunnels to Hoover Dam St. Patrick's Day Run March 15
Around700 runners will race through Lake Mead National Recreation Area March 15 during the annual Six Tunnels to Hoover Dam St. Patrick's Day Run. The race includes a 1-mile stroll, 5K, half marathon and two-person relay run along River Mountains Loop Trail and Historic Railroad Trail. Great American Cleanup, March 28
Take part in the 2015 Great American Cleanup March 28. Volunteers are needed to participate in a litter removal event at a popular area at the park. Every year, more than 4 million volunteers lend a hand in 20,000+ communities from coast to coast to participate in cleaning, beautifying and improving our quality of life. Individuals and groups welcome. Anyone under the age of 18 will need to complete a parental approval form signed by a parent or guardian.
