Spring is a great time for kids to get out in nature to explore and learn about outdoor recreation. In celebration of the 5th annual Kids in Parks Day on Saturday, May 16, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore) is inviting children and their families to participate in a Fish Tales program from 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at Bass Lake in Benzie County (accessed via Trails End Road, south of Empire). Sponsored by the National Park Trust, Kids in Parks Day encourages children and their families to participate in a nationwide day of outdoor play in local, state, and national parks. During the Fish Tales program, participants will learn about tackle, fishing ethics, fish habitat, and how to make pop can fishing rigs, which allow people to repurpose common household materials for use in outdoor recreation.
All programs offered by the National Lakeshore are free. Participants need only purchase the Park Entrance Pass or have an Annual Pass displayed in their vehicle to join in the fun. The National Lakeshore will provide all bait and tackle. Accompanying adults must have a Michigan Department of Natural Resources fishing license in order to fish; visitors 16 years of age and younger may fish without obtaining a fishing license.
