Wildland Fire Near Avon, NC Contained

A small 15-acre wildland fire that occurred over the weekend north of Avon, NC in Cape Hatteras National Seashore has been contained.Mop up crews continue to work to ensure the fire is completely out.

National Park Service staff, along with multiple volunteer fire departments including Buxton, Salvo, and Avon

Volunteer Fire Departments, North Carolina Forest Service and the US Fish & Wildlife Service, worked over the weekend to contain the fire, approximately 15 acres in size, located north of the village of Avon, NC and south of Little Kinnakeet Lifesaving Station in Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

No people were injured or are at risk at this time and no structures were damaged. The cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation.A fire line was constructed around the perimeter of the fire.

The fire was first detected around 11:00 p.m. on June 12 on the soundside near the powerline poles.The fire quickly spread eastward with prevailing southwest winds.NC Rt. 12 was completely closed to traffic from 11:00 p.m. to 3:30 a.m..

Fire crews continue to secure fire line.The National Park Service wishes to express appreciation for the quick response from local volunteer fire departments, State of North Carolina and US Fish &Wildlife Service.
