Celebrate America with Fort Pulaski National Monument
SAVANNAH -The National Park Service and Fort Pulaski National Monument will celebrate the Nation's 239th Birthday with family-friendly programs on Saturday, July 4, 2015. A special program featuring the flags that flew over Fort Pulaski during the Civil War era will be offered at 11:00 a.m. and again at 2:00 p.m. The fort, which changed hands twice during the Civil War era, saw four different flags flying from its flagstaff at one time or another. The flags of Fort Pulaski will be raised and lowered with a brief discussion of the historical events associated with each flag.
There will be cannon firing demonstrations at 11:30 a.m. and at 1:30 p.m. inside the fort. These historic weapon demonstrations will be performed by park staff and volunteers dressed as Civil War soldiers. After the afternoon salute to 'Old Glory' learn about the origins of baseball and its role at Fort Pulaski with a special interactive program at 2:00 p.m. While they weren't used in the 1860s, gloves are optional.
