Patchogue, New York -Fire Island National Seashore continues its year-long 50th anniversary celebration, with ranger-guided programs, guest lectures, nature hikes, and other events scheduled throughout the summer. A closing celebration will be held September 4-7 at Seashore sites and within Fire Island communities.
"Last September marked an important milestone," said Fire Island National Seashore Superintendent Chris Soller of the 50th anniversary of the Seashore's establishment. "This summer the festivities continue with programs and events highlighting the places, features, and people that make Fire Island National Seashore so special."
A special anniversary exhibit, "A River Runs to It," curated by the Greater Patchogue Historical Society opens June 27 at the Seashore's Patchogue-Watch Hill Ferry Terminal located at 160 West Avenue in Patchogue, New York. Through vintage photographs, circa 1800s hand-drawn maps, and memorabilia, the exhibit explores the history of the Patchogue River and its connection to Fire Island. The exhibit reception will be held July 2 from 5:30 to 8:30 PM and will include a presentation by historian Steve Lucas on the Patchogue River's historic boat yards and boat builders.
The "Fifty Years of Fire Island" Lecture Series, kicked off last September, continues this summer at the Patchogue-Watch Hill Ferry Terminal with presentations on coyotes, Fire Island-inspired artwork, maritime culture, and monarch butterfly migration. The Seashore will also host a panel discussion on August 3 at the Bay Shore-Brightwaters Public Library, honoring Fire Island's past and considering its future.
