Increased Risk of Hazardous Beach Conditions along South Facing Beaches on Wednesday, July 29, 2015

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on July 29, 2015. It is reproduced in full below.

A long period southwesterly swell is bringing an increased risk of rip currents and large shore break along the south facing beaches of Marin County today and through this evening. Beaches affected include, but are not limited to, Drakes and Limantour Beaches within Point Reyes National Seashore and Stinson Beach within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

A beach hazard statement for rip currents means that conditions are present to support a heightened risk of strong rip currents. People walking along the beach should never turn their back to the ocean. Fisherman should avoid fishing from rocks or jetties. Swimmers caught in rip currents should swim parallel to the coast to escape the rip current before trying to swim for shore. Swimmers should always swim near a lifeguard.

The warm weather will bring many people to seek relief along the coast. For additional safety tips, please visit our Safety Issues Associated with Beaches page.

Be sure to always have your eyes on the ocean.
