UPCOMING EVENTS AT LAKE MEAD NATIONAL RECREATION AREA DEC 25 TO JAN 31

BOULDER CITY, Nevada. - The following events are happening at Lake Mead National Recreation Area Dec. 25 to Jan. 31.

The Lake Mead Visitor Center will be closed Dec 25 and Jan 1.

Ranger Chat: The Mojave Desert: A Magical Land, Dec 27

Stop by the Lake Mead Visitor Center at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Dec. 27 to learn about plants that call the desert home. From the vibrant creosote bush and Joshua tee to the smallest beavertail cactus, life is abundant and thriving in what many think is a barren landscape. For more information, call 702-293-8990.

Ranger Program: Water in the West, Jan 2

Join a ranger at the Boulder Beach Amphitheater at 5 p.m. Jan. 2 to learn more about the factors affecting the availability of water in the west and its impact on Lake Mead, a reservoir serving the needs of 25 million people.

Ranger Chat: Public Lands - Treasures of Southern Nevada, Jan 3

Stop by the Lake Mead Visitor Center at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Jan. 3 to learn about the variety of public lands that surround the Las Vegas Valley. Call 702-293-8990 for more information.

Ranger Hike: St. Thomas - A Town Revealed, Jan 8

Walk back in time with a ranger Jan. 8 to the days before Lake Mead covered the small farming community of St. Thomas, Nevada. Explore the remnants of life in earlier times and learn about the lifestyles of times gone by. Bring water and a lunch for this 2 ½-mile hike. BBSC Lake Mead Marathon, Jan 9

Around 500 runners will race though Lake Mead National Recreation Area Jan. 9 for the BBSC Lake Mead Marathon. The race includes a 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon along Boulder Beach and Historic Railroad and River Mountains Loop trails. Ranger Chat: Lake Mead Rocks - Geology 101, Jan 9 and 10

Volunteer Program: Native Seed Cleaning, Jan 16

Help the Lake Mead National Recreation Area resource team prepare native seeds for future restoration projects during a park volunteer program at 10 a.m. Jan. 16. Cleaned seeds will later be planted throughout the park and will support native plant growth. For more information or to register, email chris_mirque@partner.nps.

Ranger Program: Coyotes - What You Should Know, Jan 16

Join a ranger at the Boulder Beach Amphitheater at 4 p.m. Jan. 16 to enjoy the sunset and learn more about the wily and opportunistic coyote. Find out why coyotes should be observed from afar. For more information, call the Lake Mead Visitor Center at 702-293-8990.

Fee Free Day, Jan 18

Entrance fees will be waived at Lake Mead National Recreation Area Jan. 18 in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Fees for camping, lake use or use of concessions still apply.

Ranger Hike: Bats in the Moonlight, Jan 23

Join a ranger on a hike along the Historic Railroad Trail Jan. 23 to learn about the many Mojave Desert bats that call Lake Mead National Recreation Area home. A variety of bats migrate through the park during the year, including the Mexican free-tailed bat. During this full moon hike, see where bats spend the day during certain times of the year. Ranger Chat: Wingspan Myths, Jan 24

Learn about the wingspans of a variety of desert birds at the Lake Mead Visitor Center at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Jan. 24. Visitors can compare their arm spans to the wingspans of these unique creatures. Plus, learn how they survive in this desert environment. Ranger Programs: Energy Innovation at the Park, Jan 30

The Lake Mead Institute will host an Energy Innovation Day at the Lake Mead Visitor Center Jan. 30. Join rangers and local experts 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for family-friendly programs and art activities focused on ever-changing energy needs.
