Cape Hatteras National Seashore has implemented an off road vehicle (ORV) corridor near a pair of nesting American oystercatchers at Cape Point in Buxton, N.C. The corridor is being implemented consistent with the National Park Service’s 2015 Review and Adjustment of Wildlife Protection Buffers.
The ORV corridor, located approximately 50 meters from the American oystercatcher nesting area, is a pass-through zone with no walking permitted. It protects nesting birds while allowing vehicles to travel past the area to a location that is 150 meters from the nesting activity. At the end of the corridor, the area reopens for vehicle parking and pedestrian use of Cape Point. The corridor is clearly marked with signs.
As with many off ORV routes at the Seashore, there may be times during high tides that the corridor will be impassable due to beach conditions or erosion. Keep your eyes on the tides, beach conditions, and plan ahead.
