On July 30, 31, and Aug. 1, Haleakalā NP will waive entrance fees as the park marks its Aug. 1, 2016 Centennial birthday with cultural demos, music, and ranger-led activities.
From 10am-12pm on Saturday, July 30th, local band Nevah Too Late will perform and cultural demonstrations will take place at the Summit District's Headquarters Visitor Center (at 7000 feet of elevation). From 6:30pm to 8:30pm on Saturday, rangers and local photographers will host an InstaMeetat the Summit (10,023 feet of elevation) to share tips on sunset and night sky photography. Instagrammers can share their photos using #HaleakalaNP100.
In the Kīpahulu District on Sunday, July 31st, Nevah Too Late will perform and cultural demonstrations will take place from 1pm to 3pm. Demonstrators include: Patti Gomez (feather flowers); Kaliko Kaleohano (shell art); Myrna Costello (lauhala weaving); Maile Bryan (`ohe kāpala or kapa stamping); and Wainani Kealoha (oli).
On Monday, August 1st at sunrise, visitors can use photo frames and banners to take selfies and groupshots celebrating the #CentennialSunrise, marking the first sunrise of the park's next 100 years. At 10am, superintendent Natalie Gates will speak at a brief ceremony and blessing at Headquarters Visitor Center (at 7000 feet of elevation).
