Widespread Storm Damage in Apostle Islands NL

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on July 22, 2016. It is reproduced in full below.

Bayfield, WI - Severe thunderstorms and associated high winds that occurred during the early hours on Thursday, July 21, caused widespread storm damage. Fortunately, all campers are accounted for and safe, although there were some close calls.

Park staff are still assessing damage, but there are numerous downed trees causing campsite and trail closures. The storm was spotty in where it caused damage. Islands hit hardest include Cat, Oak, Michigan, Sand and Stockton Islands.

Current closures include:

* Cat Island campsite

* Manitou Island trail

* Sand Island trail from East Bay to the light station

* Stockton Island campsites 7, 8 and 11

* Stockton Island Julian Bay trail

Further assessments are underway to determine the extent of downed trees blocking other trails. Park staff is working as quickly as possible to re-open high priority campsites and trails.
