HARKERS ISLAND, N.C. -The National Park Service is reminding Cape Lookout visitors to be mindful of swimming hazards following the drowning of a 35-year-old man on Monday.
"We are saddened by this tragic event," says Cape Lookout National Seashore Superintendent Pat Kenney. "Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the victim."
The man identified at Shackleford Banks drowned while attempting to save his three daughters after they were swept away in a rip current. Atlantic Beach Fire Department responded to the incident.
Park rangers say that if you find yourself caught in a rip current, don't swim against the current. Instead, remain calm and swim across the current, parallel to the shore, slowly working your way back to the beach at an angle. Signal for help if you need it.
