Artist and Naturalist George Boorujy to present at the 2016 Herbert Johnson Lecture Series

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Sept. 20, 2016. It is reproduced in full below.

The 2016 Herbert Johnson Lecture Series kicks off at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge on Sunday afternoon, September 25 at 2 PM with a presentation by Brooklyn-based artist and naturalist George Boorujy.

Mr. Boorujy will discuss his NY Pelagic project, a personal exploration of our connection to and impact on the ocean and its wildlife. By putting original drawings of pelagic (open ocean) birds in bottles, along with a questionnaire, and launching them into New York waterways, he is examining and raising awareness of what we value in our culture - plastic, art, and the health of the environment.

George Boorujy is an artist, educator, naturalist and blogger living and working in Brooklyn. Holding degrees in Fine Arts, he has exhibited widely, is represented by the P.P.O.W. Gallery in NYC, and is a member of the Fine Arts Faculty of the School of Visual Arts.

The one hour indoor program will be followed by a short walk to launch a bottle of his original art into the waters of Jamaica Bay.

The 2016 Herbert Johnson Lecture Series will focus on Arts-in-the-Parks, with lectures each Sunday at 2 PM through October 30:

October 2 Christine Mullally, Education Director, Rockaway Artists Alliance

October 9 Conrad Winsow, Artistic Director, Wild Shore new Music

October 16 Cern, muralist and musician

October 23 Gaia, street artist and muralist

October 30 Ritty Mahoney, Stage Director, Staten Island Shakespearean Theatre
