The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory and a Beach Hazards Statement for large surf and sneaker waves, which is in effect from late Thursday night through Friday evening.
A strong and wet Pacific weather system is expected to spread rain into the region tonight. Rain may be heavy at times. Increasing winds from the south are forecast into this evening and large swells will arrive along the coast late tonight and into Friday. A second system coming in late Saturday and into Sunday will bring more locally heavy rain and gusty winds.
Hazards from these storm systems include:
* Driving Hazards: This will be the first storm system of the season and there is accumulated oil on the roadways producing slick driving conditions.
* Winds: Locally strong and gusty winds may bring down trees and power lines. The strongest winds are expected in the hills and along the coast.
* Waves: Large breaking waves are expected, which will result in hazardous conditions in the surf zone. A combination of high tides and beaches in their summer sand profiles. These summer sand profiles are poor in preventing wave runup and allow waves to reach further inland. In the summer months sand is deposited onto our beaches and in winter, more sand is removed.
