Buxton man dies while surfing off Old Lighthouse Beach outside of Cape Hatteras National Seashore

A 32-year old Buxton, North Carolina resident died while surfing in the waters off Old Lighthouse Beach outside of Cape Hatteras National Seashore on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 21, 2017.

The surfer, Jordan Bartholomew, was spotted off the beach by a bystander who noticed that he was face down in the water. The bystander signaled to two nearby surfers that were in the water. The surfers and an individual on the beach proceeded to transport Mr. Bartholomew to the shore and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation efforts.

A 911 call was made and Dare County EMS and Sheriff's office, Hatteras Island Rescue Squad, and National Park Service staff responded. Mr. Bartholomew did not respond to additional resuscitation efforts provided by emergency responders and was pronounced dead on scene. The cause of death is unknown.

"The National Park Service's extends our condolences to Jordan's friends and family" stated Seashore Superintendent David Hallac.
