Living History Recruitment for Summer 2017

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on May 8, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

Vicksburg National Military Park is recruiting local students, ages 16 and up, who would like to participate as volunteers in the park’s Summer 2017 Living History Program. There will be four program weekends throughout the summer. June 17-18, July 1-4, July 22-23, and August 5-6.

For over 40 years, area students have portrayed Union and Confederate soldiers and civilians in order to help tell visitors the story of the assaults and siege of 1863.

Youth volunteers will be trained by park rangers in Civil War soldier’s and sailor’s skills to enable them to portray the day to day lives of these soldiers. The leaders for next year’s artillery and rifle programs will be picked from these volunteers.

Union & Confederate uniforms and accoutrements will be provided by the park. A meeting for all interested volunteers and parents will be held at the park’s maintenance training room May 20, 2017 beginning at 9:00 a.m. and concluding at 10:00 a.m. Please contact Ranger Lela White at the park at 601-636-0583 ext 2968 for more information and to register for the meeting.
