Whiskeytown National Recreation Area is planning to continue prescribed burn activities within the 54-acre Buck Project Area beginning on May 26th, 2017. The total size of this prescribed burn unit is 757 acres and is made up of a mixture of pine, oak woodland, and shrub species. It is located along the eastern park boundary, and borders both lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and private property owners, just to the west of the community of Shasta. This new project area will extend from the East Boundary Project Area (located to the south of Muletown Road) to the Mule Mountain portion of the BLM Swasey Recreation Area.
Similar to the East Boundary Project, the primary goals of the Buck Prescribed Burn Unit are to help create fire adapted local communities, enhance response to wildfires, and produce resilient landscapes. These goals would be achieved through a series of first entry prescribed fire treatments over the next 3-5 years. The park will plan to take advantage of the transition to warm and dry conditions over the next several days along with favorable wind forecasts to accomplish the desired treatment objectives.
