Hot, Smoky Conditions at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Sept. 2, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

Hot, Smoky Conditions at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area

Due to smoky conditions at Whiskeytown resulting from surrounding wildfires, boating and water based-activities are NOT advised. The visibility at the park is about a 1/2 mile, and has created unsafe conditions resulting in accidents on the water. All outdoor ranger-led programs have been cancelled for Saturday due to smoke. Anyone planning to attend ranger-led programs through Tuesday, September 5 should check the Whiskeytown NRA Website and Facebook postings regularly for status updates. https://www.nps.gov/whis/index.htm, https://www.facebook.com/WhiskeytownNationalRecreationArea

The park visitor center was briefly closed due to an air conditioning failure on Friday, Sept. 1, but reopened on Saturday morning.

A strong high-pressure system will maintain very hot weather through the weekend with continued triple digit highs and the risk of heat-related illnesses. Temperatures will peak today, with less hot weather expected for Sunday and Labor Day. Temperatures are expected to

drop to near normal levels by mid-week. For the Labor Day weekend a high risk of heat related illness remains in effect, especially for sensitive groups: elderly, children, sick people, pets and livestock.

For general park information, contact the visitor center (530) 246-1225, or visit the park website at: https://www.nps.gov/whis/index.htm
