Camp of Instruction: September 9, 2017
Watrous, NM. : At the onset of the Civil War, Fort Union established two camps for organizing and training new recruits in the school of 19th century warfare. The soldiers would go on to fill both ranks of infantry and cavalry as their service spread them throughout the Southwest. Join us as Fort Union National Monument brings these historic camps to life and step back in time with the men and women of the 3rd Regiment New Mexico Volunteers. Watch as they welcome new members, carryout company drill, interpret camp life, and conduct small arms and artillery demonstrations. The event runs on Saturday, September 9th, beginning at 10:00 am and ending at 3:00 pm.
Fort Union (1851-1891) was the largest frontier military post and supply center of the southwest. The National Park Service preserves and protects the historic Fort Union and ruts of the Santa Fe Trail. To visit the monument, take Exit 366 off I-25 at Watrous, NM, onto State Hwy. 161, 8 miles.
