The results are in! During increased enforcement patrols over Labor Day weekend U.S. Park Police (USPP) contacted 124 drivers, made 12 arrests and wrote 56 speeding tickets on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.
“On any given day, speeding, distracted and impaired driving are some of the most prevalent unsafe and illegal behaviors on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway," U.S. Park Police Lt. Jeffrey Jarboe said. “Increasing patrols on this statistically more dangerous holiday weekend helped us hold drivers accountable when they didn’t follow the rules of the road, which is key to improving the parkway’s safety."
Drivers were issued citations for seat belt violations, reckless driving, texting while driving and several other unsafe and illegal behaviors. Eight of the arrests were for impaired driving and four were for diving without a license.
There were 48 crashes and 28 DUI cases over the last four Labor Day weekends on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. That is an average of 12 crashes and seven DUI cases each year.
USPP increased enforcement patrol activities on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway over the holiday weekend in an effort to address unsafe driving behaviors. This effort complemented Maryland’s campaign to reduce impaired driving on state roadways.
“Increasing enforcement activities over the holiday weekend is just one way the National Park Service is improving safety on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, but we are doing much more," Superintendent Matthew Carroll said. “This year we painted new lane markings, removed overgrown vegetation to improve visibility and installed weather and traffic monitoring devices. And, this fall we will repave another section of the parkway."
Used by more than 120,000 vehicles each day, the Baltimore-Washington Parkway is one of the most heavily traveled roadways in the Washington metropolitan area.
