Tonto National Monument Receives Field Trip Grant from the National Park Foundation

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Sept. 29, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

Roosevelt, AZ- Tonto National Monument was selected to receive a 2017 field trip grant from the National Park Foundation, the official charity of America's national parks. Tonto National Monument will bring fourth grade students from six elementary schools to the monument for a curriculum-based field trip.

This grant, part of the Foundation's Open OutDoors for Kids program, supports Every Kid in a Park.

"I can still remember the excitment of exploring my first national park as a kid and it made me want to discover more," said National Park Foundation President Will Shafroth. "I'm thrilled that our National Park Foundation grants make it possible for hundreds of thousands of kids to experience the wonder of parks for the first time, sparking a lifelong love for national parks."

The students will participate in a three-hour field trip program that introduces them to Arizona prehistory and archaeology. The program will include:

• hiking a 1-mile roundtrip trail to an ancient cliff dwelling

• discussing how archaeology helps us understand the past

• learning how prehistoric people were able to survive and thrive in the American southwest.
