INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE: On Saturday, November 4, enjoy stories and songs about Great Lakes shipwrecks from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center. Join a ranger for a program called, “Great Lakes Gales" that will focus on what makes the storms so treacherous in the month of November and the historic shipwrecks of the Great Lakes. There are approximately 6,000 shipwrecks throughout Lake Michigan and many were never located. However, some wrecks, like that of the JD Marshall, are located nearby.
Also, join local musician, Jim Nelson, who specializes in American folk music, as he sings about the Great Lakes shipwrecks and gales. Songs range from spirited to melancholy sailing songs.
The Indiana Dunes Visitor Center is located at 1215 North State Road 49, about one mile north of Interstate 94. The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is one of 417 units of the National Park System ranging from Yellowstone to the Statue of Liberty. Located in Northwest Indiana, the park includes 15 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and 15,000 acres of biodiverse beaches, woods, prairies, and marshes. Up to 2 million visitors come to the Indiana Dunes each year.
