SAVANNAH, GA - To commemorate Veterans Day the National Park Service will waive entrance fees for the entire holiday weekend. Savannah’s national park - Fort Pulaski National Monument - will be free to visit Saturday and Sunday, November 11th and 12th.
Fort Pulaski National Monument will honor our nation’s veterans with a special living history weekend. Living historians from the 48th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment will recreate many aspects of daily life inside Civil War-era Fort Pulaski. A variety of programs will be offered giving visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of the American Civil War.
The 48th New York Infantry was stationed at Fort Pulaski from June 1862 through June 1863. During their year-long stay, the unit remained vigilant, always prepared for a Confederate counter attack, an attack that never materialized. Their stay was documented in a series of early photographs that are displayed in exhibits throughout the park.
On Saturday, November 11th at 1:00 p.m. author John Walker Guss will discuss the 48th New York Volunteers and his Images of America series book on Fort Pulaski. After the program his book will be available for purchase and signing by the author at our Eastern National Bookstore.
