Lake McDonald Properties Management Plan and Environmental Assessment Available for Public Review and Comment

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Jan. 31, 2018. It is reproduced in full below.

WEST GLACIER, MT. - Glacier National Park has announced the Lake McDonald Properties Management Plan Draft Environmental Assessment availability for a 30 day public review and comment. Comments will be accepted until March 1, 2018.

The Lake McDonald Properties Management Plan addresses seven park-owned properties surrounding Lake McDonald. The properties include approximately 24 historic buildings and structures, most of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The cabins at Lake McDonald represent part of Glacier National Park’s heritage and history, reflecting a variety of architectural and development patterns for lakeside cabins. This EA evaluates a proposal for the future preservation, management, and administration of the NPS-owned properties at Lake McDonald.

Two alternatives are evaluated in the EA. 1) Alternative A, the no-action and 2) Alternative B, Manage NPS Owned Properties near Lake McDonald Using an Adaptive Management Approach. Alternative A is the No Action alternative. Alternative B is the NPS preferred alternative. It provides for an adaptive strategy for the management of the cabin properties that employs a range of options for each property, from historic leasing, park or concessioner use, stabilization, to removal of buildings.

The EA is available through the park’s planning website. Comments can be made directly through this website, or written to: Superintendent, Glacier National Park, Attn: Lake McDonald Properties Management Plan EA, PO Box 128 West Glacier, Montana 59936.
