EVERGLADES CITY, Fla - Everglades National Park’s Gulf Coast District invites all to enjoy Calusa Days, a free outdoor event, March 23-24, 2018. Calusa Days focuses on the lives of all the people who have made the Ten Thousand Islands their home. Come hear absorbing stories, participate in activities or experience learning about these intriguing islands on a paddling adventure. Join the fun by land or by sea to learn how these valuable islands have provided and shaped the lives of many!
On Friday March 23rd from 7:30pm-8:30pm, Florida Public Archaeology Network’s Mallory Fenn will present an archaeoastronomy program -- Ancient Stargazing. Fenn will share how "cultures the world over have studied the night sky for thousands of years, using the stars for navigation, time-telling and more!" Fenn offers the Ancient Stargazing program again on March 24th, from 11:00am-12:00pm.
The fun continues on March 24th. From 1:00pm-2:00pm, local historian Marya Repko will share from her new book, 'The Story of Barron Collier'. Repko invites all to “Hear about the amazing man who bought over 1 million acres of South Florida land and had a county named after him!" From 10:00am until 3:00pm, interesting activities and engaging demonstrations will be provided at outdoor locations on park grounds.
This event is a great way to be outside and be with friends and family while enjoying your national park! As there is no running water due to Hurricane Irma, be sure to bring water, as well as sunscreen, hat, insect repellant, lawn chair, and snacks to enjoy during your visit.
