Horseshoe Bend National Military Park invites the public to visit during National Park Week, April 21-29. Superintendent Barbara Tagger encourages visitors to “Enjoy the beautiful Alabama spring weather during National Park Week at Horseshoe Bend National Military Park. Join us on Saturday, April 21 for Junior Ranger Day, as we host the Auburn University’s Southeastern Raptor Center, followed by a ranger-led program. Then on Sunday morning, April 22, join us for a beginner’s bird walk in the park."
On Saturday, April 21 at 10:00 a.m. in Horseshoe Bend’s picnic area, Auburn University’s Southeastern Raptor Center will present a program on Birds of Prey. They will bring several hawks and owls for a truly special and up-close encounter with wildlife.
Immediately following the Raptor program, join a park ranger for an interactive program dissecting owl pellets, which contain undigested parts of owl prey such as bones and fur. Building on the Raptor program information, we will explore an owl’s food chain. The park will provide all gloves, safety equipment, and sterile pellets for this 30 minute program, beginning at 11:15 a.m.
April 21 is also National Junior Ranger Day! From 9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m., ask the ranger at the front desk for a Junior Ranger booklet. Simply complete the required activities to earn your own Junior Ranger badge.
On April 22 at 8:00 a.m. meet a park ranger in front of the visitor center for a Beginners’ Bird Walk. Discover spring migrants passing through Horseshoe Bend, as well as year round residents. Please bring binoculars, water, sunscreen and insect repellent. The park has a few pairs of binoculars to lend. This walk will last 1 ½-2 hours.
Every Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. join a park ranger at the Horseshoe Bend Visitor Center for Causes and Consequences: The Battle of Horseshoe Bend. This 20-30 minute talk will be followed by an optional ranger-led walk to the battlefield. The talk will take place rain or shine. The walk to the battlefield is weather and staffing dependent.
As always, programs are family-friendly and FREE to the public.
