As part of a multi-year project, SEAC will be returning to Fort Frederica National Park (FOFR) next week to conduct a geophysical survey. Located on St. Simons Island, FOFR encompasses an 18th century British fort that was originally established by James Oglethorpe to protect the newly founded colony of Georgia from the Spanish Florida. While several former structures have been uncovered by past archeological projects, the scope of work was spatially limited. However recent technological advances through the use of geophysical equipment have allowed for broader survey coverage with little to no impact on archeological resources. It is our mission over the next week, to continue the survey of FOFR to assist in revealing additional structures related to the fort, both to help in the interpretation of the military settlement as well as preserve these elements for future research.
