Vicksburg, MS: On September 8, 2018, the National Park Service Office of Public Health will be recognizing the work of Shape Up Vicksburg and Vicksburg National Military Park in promoting healthy lifestyles with the presentation of the National Park Service’s Healthy Parks, Healthy People Pioneer Achievement Award.
“We are honored to be able to present this award to Shape Up Vicksburg," said Superintendent Bill Justice. “All national parks are great places for people to explore their physical, mental and spiritual health, and we recognize the hard work of Shape Up Vicksburg in making this military park an asset for our community’s continued health."
To celebrate this achievement, Shape Up Vicksburg and Vicksburg National Military Park will be hosting a free walk September 8th at 9am. During this walk, participants will have the opportunity to talk with Park Rangers and with a licensed doctor as part of the “Walk with A Doc" program. Interested individuals should meet at the Sherman Avenue walk-in entrance to the park, and be prepared to walk at least one mile along the road. Participants should dress for the weather and bring water.
At 9:30am, the walk will arrive at the African American Monument, where Superintendent Bill Justice will present the national awards on behalf of the National Park Service. After the brief ceremony, participants will have the opportunity to partake in recording “Wade in the Water" as part of a project to honor the 169th anniversary of Harriet Tubman’s journey to freedom. Those who are interested in joining the chorus are encouraged to contact Rose Rains (e-mail us, 601-630-6021) in advance.
Parking for media will be available at the Sherman Avenue entrance and at the African American Monument. Members of the media are encouraged to contact Scott Babinowich (e-mail us, 601-619-2905) to obtain detailed logistical information.
