The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Sept. 11, 2018. It is reproduced in full below.

Vicksburg, MS: On Sept. 15, 2018 Vicksburg National Military Park will host a volunteer work day from 8am to 12pm. Work will focus along the South Loop of the Scenic Drive, Pemberton’s Headquarters, and the Shirley House. People wishing to volunteer do not need to stay for the full event, but should arrive no later than 8:15am.

“Last year we had close to 100 volunteers, which was amazing," said Superintendent Bill Justice. “This year we hope for an even bigger turnout. With the community’s help we can make a big difference in the state of this park." Work in the South Loop will include weed-eating along the road, pulling weeds from the road, helping maintenance staff prune limbs and clear around monuments, and help with painting some of the historic iron tablets. At Pemberton’s Headquarters, volunteers will be able to help park staff cleanup the flowerbeds and repair an exterior staircase.

The South Loop will be closed to vehicle traffic from 8am-12pm on September 15th to facilitate the volunteer event. Registration for the event will begin at 7:30am at the visitor center. All equipment will be provided, but participants should wear long pants and sturdy shoes. Those wishing to use weed-eaters need to wear boots. This is a family-friendly event, and tasks will be available for all age groups and skillsets. Anybody under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The workday will end at 12:00pm with lunch provided by the Friends of Vicksburg National Military Park and Campaign.
