Fort Oglethorpe, GA: On Sunday, Feb. 3, at 2 pm, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will present a special “Winter Vistas" driving and hiking tour of Chickamauga Battlefield. This 90-minute tour begins inside the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center.
Come participate in a tour exploring a part of Chickamauga Battlefield that is not often seen, the terrain that caused one Union general to say the battle was “Bushwhacking on a grand scale." From late morning through the afternoon of Sept. 20, 1863, chaos reigned on the battlefield as Union and Confederate soldiers groped through the forest and blindly stumbled into one another in the fields and forests that define Chickamauga Battlefield. This tour will take advantage of the lack of foliage to examine the field that could not be seen in 1863, allowing participants to view the terrain features that played such an important role for the men of General Joseph Kershaw’s South Carolina Brigade as they experienced the Battle.
A good understanding of the ground you are on often determines who will win and who will lose in a battle, and it also plays a large role in being able to understand the events that occurred on a battlefield many years later. This walk will be approximately one mile, so wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the conditions
