Carriage Roads Closed for Mud Season in Acadia National Park

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on April 1, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

BAR HARBOR, MAINE - The carriage roads in the park are closed to all users until the roads dry out and become firm enough to prevent damage to their gravel surface. The warmer weather and wet conditions have softened the carriage roads and made them susceptible to damage. Walking, bicycling, and riding horses on the carriage roads under the current conditions can cause ruts and potholes that will channel water and exacerbate erosion.

“We’re asking all visitors to help protect the historic carriage road system and prevent costly repairs by cooperating with this temporary closure," said Superintendent Kevin Schneider.

The carriage roads at Acadia are true roads that were built to the highest standards of rural roads at the time. These broken stone roads are state-of-the-art examples of road engineering technology that stand as unique examples of their time and place.
