Chilkoot Trail Reopened After Completion of Bridge Move

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on May 21, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

Skagway - Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park has reopened the Chilkoot Trail north of mile 2.4, the site where a bridge was moved to address a safety concern of river erosion around the bridges supports.

While the bridge is now in its new location and safe to use, hikers should expect to encounter trail work continuing around the bridge throughout the summer while a reroute to the new bridge site is completed. Over 3,000 people are anticipated to complete the trail this summer.

The Chilkoot Trail is open to the public year round, but a permit is required June - early September. Permit fees help to maintain the trail, support trail rangers who establish wayfinding markers, provide medical assistance to injured hikers, and give daily interpretive programs at Sheep Camp each evening at 7:00 p.m. AKDT. To learn more about hiking the trail contact the Trail Center at (907) 983-9234 or visit us online.
