Upper Cliff Dwelling Trail Closure Extended into January 2020

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Dec. 22, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

Roosevelt, AZ - The existing Upper Cliff Dwelling Trail closure will remain in effect through Jan. 16, 2020. This extended closure is a result of delayed trail reconstruction following significant storm damage, flash flooding, washouts, and erosion along the trail from excessive precipitation over the past few months. Additional precipitation is expected in the coming week. Hazards including damaged trail crossings, loose rocks and debris, collapsed steps, and unstable ground create unsafe conditions for visitors and staff at this time.

Tonto National Monument will be working with National Park Service trail crews from other parks to expedite the reconstruction of the Upper Cliff Dwelling Trail. Trail work is expected to be completed by Jan. 16, 2020. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, Upper Cliff Dwelling tours will begin on Jan. 17, 2020 and continue through the last weekend of April. The Upper Cliff Dwelling Trail will only be opened when deemed safe to do so. Visitor and staff safety is of the utmost importance to Tonto National Monument.

Reservations for tours between Jan. 17, 2020 and April 27, 2020 can be made by calling Tonto National Monument at (928)467-2241.
